Where Africa’s Next Scientists Begin.
A cleantech virtual lab platform that slashes training costs, prevents lab waste at the source, and makes advanced biotech skills accessible to every scientist regardless of location or bandwidth.
The High Cost of Traditional Lab Training
Every year, labs lose millions to contamination, wasted reagents, and inefficient training. A single cell culture lab can emit over 14 tonnes of CO₂e per year-equivalent to driving 35,000 miles or the annual emissions of three average African households. Meanwhile, 70% of African biomedical students graduate without critical hands-on lab skills due to limited access, cost barriers, and safety concerns.
Wastes Millions
- High losses from contamination and errors
- A single contamination incident: R50,000-R250,000
- R50,000+ monthly on consumables alone
- Capital costs for equipment and infrastructure
Costs the Planet
- 250-400g of plastic waste per student, per session.
- 14 tonnes of CO₂e emitted per traditional lab annually.
- High energy and water consumption.
- Millions of disposable items destined for landfills
Slows Discovery
- Training bottlenecks delay research by weeks
- Only 30% of biomedical students gain adequate hands-on experience
- Contamination rates reach 40% during initial training
- Equipment downtime limits innovation.
We Don't Replace Labs. We Augment Them.
LabZero is a virtual lab platform that lets students and researchers practice tissue culture and aseptic techniques in a realistic, interactive simulation-before they ever enter a physical BSL-2 lab. We prevent waste at the source, turning every virtual experiment into a step toward a greener, smarter Africa.
How It Works
Interactive 3D BSL-2 Simulations
Perform real procedures like pipetting, plating, and contamination control in an immersive virtual environment designed for biological realism.
Adaptive Learning Engine
Tracks user actions in real-time, flags mistakes instantly, and provides corrective guidance to ensure mastery before physical lab entry.
Cloud-Based & Scalable
Optimized 2D architecture runs smoothly on any computer, even with variable internet connectivity, purpose-built for African infrastructure.
Cleantech Impact Dashboard
Quantifies and tracks carbon, plastic, and cost savings for institutional ESG and sustainability reporting.
Our Scientific Foundation
LabZero is engineered at the intersection of computational biology, data science, and virtual lab engineering. Every simulation is grounded in real-world data and validated through rigorous research, ensuring it accurately replicates the physical cell culture environment.
Our Research Pillars
Simulation Fidelity
Focus: Modelling physical cell culture processes in silico.
We develop high-fidelity algorithms that replicate nuanced behaviours of cell lines, reagent interactions, and contamination events. Skills learned in the virtual environment translate directly to the physical lab.
Behavioural Data Tracking
Focus: Capturing user interactions for adaptive learning.
Our platform tracks every action from pipetting technique to workflow efficiency powering the Adaptive Learning Engine to provide personalized feedback and a unique fingerprint of lab proficiency.
Environmental Impact Modelling
Focus: Quantifying lab resource savings through virtualization.
A proprietary model converts virtual training sessions into precise metrics on plastic, reagent, energy, and water savings for auditable ESG reporting.
Context-Aware Design
Focus: Co-creating solutions for African research priorities.
Our research localizes biotech simulation for African diseases, resource constraints, and research contexts ensuring relevance and maximum impact.

From a Lab's Waste Problem to a Global LabZero Solution
LabZero began with a simple observation in a Cape Town laboratory: the greatest sustainability gain doesn't come from recycling waste, but from preventing it altogether. This insight sparked our journey from ReGlove to LabZero transforming how Africa trains its scientists.
The ReGlove Chapter
We started with ReGlove an initiative to recycle used lab gloves into new PPE. While impactful, we discovered a more powerful truth: recycling is good, but prevention is transformative. Every failed experiment represented wasted plastic, reagents, and opportunity.
The LabZero Vision
We asked a better question: What if we could prevent this waste from being created in the first place? This led to our pivot to LabZero a LabZero platform that virtualizes training and R&D, tackling the problem at its root.
“We learned that recycling is good – but prevention is powerful. LabZero solves the same problem, just at the source.”
